a film for adults

Based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris Roman, CONCLAVE takes viewers inside the Vatican during the process of selecting the new pope by the College of Cardinals... filled with political infighting, twists, turns, and surprises galore. And... if the average age of the crowd in the theater where I attended a screening is any indication... "adults" flock to this film. Directed by Edward Berger (THE END OF THE WESTERN RAILWAY), CONCLAVE moves briskly, unraveling a mystery—not a "whodunnit" but more of a "who's gonna get it"—and it gets surprisingly tense.

Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER films) anchors the events as “Dean.” The cardinal is tasked with leading the ragtag group of cardinals toward a consensus choice for the next pope. He acts as much detective as facilitator as he battles his own conscience of faith…and ambition…while uncovering the schemes and plots of some of the “humble servants” vying for the top job. John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini, and a few others (mostly unknown) vying for “pole position” in the race to become the next pope are able assistants. Special mention must go to the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his supporting role as one of the contenders whose platform seems to be “I don’t want this” but who, deep down, really, really wants it. Don’t be surprised if Fiennes and Tucci (and director Berger) are both mentioned at Oscar nomination time (they’re that good). As stated above, this movie is full of twists and turns and is a fun ride to go through, but to be honest, I felt like this movie went "one twist too many" and should/could have ended 10 minutes early (without the final twist).

Now, some will argue that this final twist is the highlight of the movie, but... I would have been just fine without that point being brought up. and join other "adults" in the movie theater.
